Confidence through clarity
Every child deserves to feel secure when they open a book or try to write a word. Confidence doesn’t grow from rushing through sounds or introducing tricky words too early. It grows from clarity: teaching the right sound at the right time, in a carefully ordered pathway:— a mapped phonics continuum that protects children from overload.
What happens in Phase 5. Why it matters in Year 1
By Phase 5, children are not only meeting new sounds. They are also exploring different spellings for familiar sounds, noticing that letters can change their voice in different words, and beginning to recognise tricky words that don’t follow phonics rules. With a mapped phonics continuum, these challenges are introduced step by step, so confidence grows without confusion. This stage usually takes place in Year 1, when children have already built a foundation of sounds in Reception. In Year 1, phonics teaching becomes more complex:
New graphemes: children are introduced to fresh ways of representing sounds, such as ay for /ai/.
Alternative spellings: they discover that the same sound can be written in different ways, for example ai, ay, or a‑e.
Alternative pronunciations: they learn that letters can change their sound depending on the word, such as ea in head compared with bead.
Tricky words: these are words that don’t follow phonics rules. Children learn them through repeated practice and by recognising them on sight, so they can read and write fluently even when the spelling doesn’t match the sound.

This stage can feel demanding because children suddenly see multiple spellings for one sound and words that don’t follow the rules they’ve learned. With a structured sequence, though, it becomes manageable and confidence grows. Why sequencing matters — and why our boxes are different
One of the biggest challenges in Phase 5 is learning that the same sound can be written in different ways. Many subscriptions introduce all the spellings at once, which quickly leads to overload and confusion. Our approach is different.
In the Growing Learner Box, new spellings are introduced one at a time, in a carefully mapped order. For example, children might first meet ai for the /ai/ sound, then later ay, and only afterwards a‑e. This step‑by‑step sequencing means children build confidence gradually, without being asked to juggle too much at once.
💡What makes us different: we know the mapped journey inside out, and every detail in the box, including the lessons as well as the resources, is designed to mirror it. That’s why our boxes feel clearer, calmer, and more effective than generic subscriptions. They don’t just feel purposeful, they actively move children forward, step by step, so progress is visible and confidence grows.
The Learning Cycle — how children secure Phase 5
Children don’t just meet a new sound once and move on. They need chances to revisit, practise, apply, and revisit again. That’s the rhythm that makes learning stick. Our Growing Learner Box is designed to mirror this cycle at home, so parents can feel confident they’re supporting the same mapped journey taught in school.
Revisit: children return to sounds and spellings they already know, keeping them fresh and secure.
Introduce: a new sound or spelling is presented clearly and briefly, with a simple example so children know what to listen for and look for.
Practise: they rehearse the new sound or spelling in short, manageable steps.
Apply: they use it in reading and writing, so the learning feels purposeful.
Revisit again: the cycle loops back, ensuring nothing is forgotten and confidence grows.
💡 Because every box includes lessons as well as resources, parents get prompts for each phase of the cycle, when to revisit, how to introduce, what to practise, and where to apply, so home support stays clear and calm.
Support that makes sense at home
Parents don’t need to be teachers to support phonics but they do need resources that feel clear, complete, and aligned with school. Each Growing Learner Box is more than a generic pack. It brings together expert‑led lessons, engaging activities, flashcards, carefully chosen books, and step‑by‑step parent guidance. This means you’re never left guessing. The lessons show you how to introduce, practise, apply, and revisit sounds in the right order. The resources give children the chance to explore tricky patterns, longer words, and alternative spellings with confidence. And with a parent community alongside you, support feels calm, purposeful, and linked to progress.

Closing invitation
Phonics is most effective when taught step by step, with tricky words and alternative spellings introduced at the right time. The Growing Learner Box provides that structure, helping children grow into confident readers and writers while giving parents peace of mind. Every box comes with lessons and resources designed by an accredited trainer, so you can feel secure knowing you’re following the same mapped journey taught in school. Progress isn’t left to chance. It’s built in, step by step.
✨ Clearer, calmer, and mapped for progress. The Growing Learner Box is your partner in helping children thrive.
